Here in the US, Canine Heart Disease specifically Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) has been a huge topic of discussion. As many of our long term followers know, Henry was on Orijen Large Breed Puppy for the first year and a half with us. Just as I was beginning the switch to adult food terrifying reports of healthy dogs falling sick started coming out. I immediately switched Henry to a brand not suspected in the FDA reports of DCM. BUT that doesn’t mean Im happy with the switch. Henry currently eats Purina Pro Plan Savor Chicken & Rice Blend and he will continue on this blend until I find a better alternative, that could be months or years. Am I happy with the ingredients? No. I honestly never imagined feeding Henry a brand like Purina, I was so happy with how he did on Orijen. Do I wish I could afford (both financially and physically) to put him on a raw diet? Yes. But here is where we are in our food journey. Henry will continue to be on a “safe” kibble until enough research is available to be confident making a change. His echocardiogram this Spring came back normal. The way I see it, as unhappy as I am with the ingredients in Purina if dogs were dropping like flies from their formula we would know about it. Is there mass hysteria suddenly about this topic? Yes and my goodness there are a lot of opinions from conspiracy theories to half baked research, Im not so sure there is ANYONE that knows what the safest option is. Do I believe that Henry being on a lesser brand of kibble for the time being will hurt him? No. I genuinely believe we will have answers over the next year of research, if at some point it seems like research is at a standstill then I will have to reevaluate. We are all just dog parents try to do what’s best, form your own opinions, be open to change, speak with someone you trust with your dogs health. I will keep you guys updated if and when we do make a change.
