Let’s start with a number, $7,000,000! Oooer. Price realised at Christie’s sale for this magnificent diamond, and I was fortunate to have my hands on it and have a good look at it. Beautiful stone, a ‘fancy yellow’ cushion modified brilliant-cut diamond of 118.05 carats! 3cm across and close to 2cm deep. The colour in these stones is due to the presence of nitrogen atoms in pairs or small groups called aggregates that replace carbon atoms in the structure. This colour was often referred to as yellow “Cape” derived from ‘Cape’ Colony in South Africa as yellow stones were commonly found here when first discovered in 1867. This stone is VS2 meaning there are slight pinpoint inclusions visible under a lens, and just look at that large culet in the middle. I always look at the culet where present as this gives an indication of the lightest colour of the stone, the overall colour and ‘saturation’ due to the light bouncing around through longer ‘pathlengths’. As the hardest substance known, the facets are unmistakable, so pristine, clean and sharp! There are some tiny ‘nicks’ on the extremely thin girdle belying its long history. In different lights it has a slight fluorescence and gives a warmer softer glow than the ‘harsher’ grading gem-light - lovely character. I wonder where this stone will end up? Item of jewellery or art? Recut to get a better colour grade? I love these big stones, who doesn’t? and this one is unnamed, so whoever purchased it…up to you 😎Thanks Christie’s for the opportunity to view. One of the wonderful aspects of auctions is that you can create amazing jewels which will never exist ! This morning in Geneva Christie’s was exhibiting the fabulous jewels from it’s may auction in a special room highlights from the al Thani collection which will be sold by Christie’s in New stork on the 19th of June. Using a long fabulous sautoir of natural pearls which is part of the Geneva auction and mixing it with a single strand of big natural pearls from the al Thani collection ( center of the picture) I created this rather exciting necklace. #christiesjewels#pearls#jewelry
That charming tiara will be sold by Christie’s in London on the 12th of June. It was created at the very end of XVIIIth century or at the beginning of XIX th century. It is super elegant, super easy to wear and the estimate is only 30 000€. You can wear it for a diner, a wedding ( I mean as a guest like they do it in Sweden or Denmark) or you can even wear it alone when you are home in the evening just to end your day with something fun. Frankly, I never understood why elegant women don’t wear tiaras any longer. It is so much more fun than a hat. I guess this the reason I so enjoyed seeing girls in the streets or in the metro (at least in Paris) wearing their long hairs with a kind of golden or diamanté bandeau holding them. #jewelry#diamonds#auction#christiesjewels
