The ‘orient’ or lustre of a pearl is a vital part of the enchanting beauty of natural salt water pearls. Fresh water natural pearls rarely ever produce the same high lustre. The highest lustre in a saltwater pearl will enable you to see your own face reflected quite clearly in each pearl. If you are a pearl enthusiast, then watch out for our Magnificent Jewels auctions, where you will see spectacular natural pearls.
Rarely do items from the renowned Rothschild Collection appear on the market but when they do the world pays attention. This remarkable detailing of the rise of power of King Philip V of Spain is portrayed in great detail on a pair of royal cabinets commissioned by King Philip, circa 1713. The imagery portrays the dominance and expansion of the Spanish Empire. The central compartment reveals a highly decorated interior in the style of a grand ballroom and every part of the cabinets are decorated and profusely set with the monogram of the King. This pair of cabinets comes from an original set of 4 and their jewel like decoration make these cabinets arguably the most ambitious furniture ever manufactured in Flanders at that time. Masterpieces from the Rothschild Collection are on view at our King Street Galleries until 1pm on Thursday 4 July (Auction 4pm).
Exceptional royal presentation box, circa 1860, with miniature of HRH the Prince of Wales, later King Edward the VII of England. The box was a personal gift given to General Sir Samuel James Browne by Albert Edward Prince of Wales. At this date the diamonds would most probably have come from the Brazilian diamond mines, hence the typical thick octahedral shapes that are often associated with these mines. Our Gold Boxes auction will be on view at our King Street Galleries Sat 29 June to Tue 2 July. Auction 3 July.
