#ad Luminous skin with medium coverage: I’m happy to announce that Dermablend Professional is now officially PETA certified cruelty free, and I am hopeful other brands will follow suit. With so many alternative testing methods available, it’s antiquated and unnecessary — and our laws need to change to reflect that, both at home and abroad!
When you think of @dermablendpro, their amazing pigmentation and maximum coverage that can mask tattoos and birthmarks seamlessly might come to mind, but have you ever tried their Flawless Creator Foundation Drops, which provide weightless full coverage? Go for sheer with one drop into your skin care, add another for medium coverage, or go full coverage with four drops at full strength.
Since I normally do sheer, I changed it up and went for medium coverage with a luminous finish by adding a larger drop to 2 pumps of serum and blending it out with a damp sponge. I then added brightening concealer and highlighter and blended those out (tapping, not dragging), applied luminous blush, and then set with Dermablend Professional Illuminating Banana Powder under my eyes, and on my forehead, sides of nose and chin. The final product is a more evenly pigmented finish that still allows my natural skin and beauty marks to show through. These drops have so much versatility—I think next time I’ll go a little more sheer with more serum and less drops, but add some liquid highlighter for a pretty sheen. How would you use it? One of the unfortunate side effects of depression is how it can drag others down with you. When I started my current blog back in 2008, it was partly to pull myself out of a rut. I was working from home, had few friends in this newish-to-me city, and wore pajamas day in and out. I rarely left my apartment, except to take Miku on walks. Once, a friend of mine threw pajama-clad me over his shoulder and carried me out of my apartment. I started noticing that Miku was sleeping more and more during the day. She, too, was depressed. I hated what I was doing to her, so I made a change. I started getting dressed up as if going out, even if I were staying in, and taking photos to hold myself accountable. The whole look good, feel good thing really worked for me; after getting dressed, I found I wanted to get out more. I’d pack Miku in her backpack, hop on the train, and get off at a new stop where we could explore. Even when we were home all day, she was happy, because I was. She takes on my anxiety, my sadness. But she takes on my happiness, too. My grandma calls us “soulmates” and marvels at our connection, how I wake up in the middle of the night just knowing if something is wrong with her, how she’s the same way with me. You can take one look at Miku and see when I’m feeling low, either because she’s desperate to make me happy, nudging and licking me and doing somersaults to make me smile—or because she, too, looks sad or anxious. Even when I’m doing my best to pretend, she knows. It affects Bobby, too, but he usually stays in the doing-somersaults-to-make-me-smile category. I’m surrounded 24/7 by sunshine and pure love, between Bobby, Miku, and my cats, so it’s always a wonder how I sink so deeply into depressive states. But it happens.
Sometimes it’s necessary to take time away from your social life—online and off—and letting yourself feel everything, undiluted and without distractions. It’s also necessary to know when to pick yourself up, put yourself together, and get back to work and the people who will help you out of your hole, whether they have to throw you over their shoulder or just meet you for lunch.
Miku and I are looking forward to a better week.
Miku & Bunny. 🌙✨ Remember when we lost Miku’s Bunny and I had the whole internet out searching for a replacement? At first, Bobby thought I was overreacting because she has *so* many toys, and he tried giving her the sloth, moose, and raccoon equivalents. She likes those fine, but with Bunny gone, she wanted nothing to do with them. The internet came through (you’re all angels)—and my sister’s dogs gave Miku one of theirs, so she now has 2 Bunnies and Bobby fully understands their importance. She has never loved another toy as much as Bunny, and freaked out when she got her back. I promise I will never lose Bunny again! Swipe to see the day Miku was reunited with Bunny. #dogsofinstagram
I spent the last week and a half with these little ones, before they both go back to school. I can’t believe how much my nieces and nephews are growing up, and I cherish every minute with them. Two of my sisters also flew up for a couple of days, and when I dropped off the kids I was able to see my family for a couple more. It was exactly what I needed. I took some time to unplug (thanks @hollywang, for taking over while I was absent!) but I’ll post some cute videos and photos from the past week on my stories. I’m so grateful for my family and friends, @thisfellow and my animals. ❤️
Courtney @colormecourtney@colormemagic just told me it’s the 50th anniversary of The Haunted Mansion, my favorite ride and also my favorite costume series we’ve ever done. Instagram crops the full portraits, so check my stories to see the full versions. I’m normally working on my Halloween costumes during the summer, but since things have been hectic and less than stellar, I haven’t even been able to give it more than a passing thought. My original idea might be too lofty for my new time constraints, so any new theme ideas are welcome! Please leave your suggestions below. #hauntedmansion50thanniversary#hauntedmansion
On Friday the 26th, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to put Vester to sleep after his surgery had irreversible complications. It was a shock, and I haven’t wanted to talk about it, or talk to anyone period, and Bobby and I have spent many days alternating between crying and consoling one another. He was our baby, and so incredibly special. I’ve never met another cat like him. He was the cat who made “I’m not a cat person” friends into cat people. Vester was so funny, so smart, so mischievous. He liked to put his front paws in Bobby’s or visitors’ shoes, as if trying on a human identity. He could open doors, and always slept between Bobby and me, the little spoon to each of us at different points of the night. If one of us woke early, he’d wriggle under the other’s arms and stay there, even if he was wide awake. He always wrapped his little paw around our arms. He preferred to be held like a baby, and his signature move was to reach out and touch our faces with his little paw, give a kiss, and then push our faces away. His favorite toy was a laser pointer. All you had to do was pick it up and he would come running to play. Vester was simultaneously our most low maintenance, coolest cat, and an ornery brother to Lacy and Kitty Boos. His favorite game was to wait for them to go in the litter box, block the exit, and gently smack them every time they tried to get out. He was such a little stinker, only really liked Miku, but I’ll never forget how sweet he was with our Fospice pup Coco, like he knew she needed extra love. We were both obsessed with him, but there was no doubt he was a daddy’s boy. I’ve never seen a stronger cat/human bond than the one between Bobby and Vester. We are devastated. He wasn’t just a cat, he was our family. And after an already awful year, it feels pretty horrible to have a pure source of joy and love taken from us. I’ll spend the rest of my life wondering what I should’ve done differently, but I’m thankful for the countless specialists who dedicated their time to helping our baby boy. Rest In Peace, baby boy. We will never stop missing you. 💔
While my product choices will vary depending on my skin’s current needs, this particular routine is highly focused on hydration. When I filmed this, I had only been using the @beautypie products for about a month, but it’s actually been more like two months as of posting.
Use code KEIKOSENTME at @beautypie for an extra $50 in your first allowance, and check out my full review on my blog (link to post) to learn more about it! #beautypie#ad
Steps and products (continued in comments): 1: After initial cleanse (to remove SPF and makeup), I cleansed with @beautypie Japanfusion Pure Transforming Cleanser. I work into dry skin, add water to make it a milky consistency, then wash with a warm washcloth.
2. Tone. Tonight I’m using one that is a little more gentle but still exfoliating (due to the Glycolic Acid) and brightening. This preps my skin for the next products.
3. Retinol. I’m using a brightening retinol to help reduce irregular pigmentation. Retinol boosts collagen production, increases cell turnover, and prevents/improves fine lines. If you’re new to retinol, you may need to start slow & with a lower percentage and give your skin time to adjust, & avoid using with stronger acids.
4. Eye cream. I’ve never used a retinol eye cream before, but I heard amazing things about @beautypie Super Retinol Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream and decided to order it. It’s super gentle, hydrating, and has a plumping effect. I’ve yet to try any other Beauty Pie retinol products but I’m definitely going to order some others to test out!
5. Superdrops Flash Face Lift. Also by Beauty Pie, I ordered this and their triple hyaluronic acid drops to try side by side. I prefer the Superdrops for night, as they’re a little heavier than I’d like for the daytime. Formulated with hyaluronic acid (which attracts and retains moisture) and peptides (which promote collagen production), this is both great for hydration and has anti-aging benefits — plumping, smoothing, and preventing fine lines.
6. Moisturizer. Formulated with colloidal oatmeal, this one is great for sensitive or irritated skin.

I have a skin-forward makeup routine: most days, I skip foundation completely, and I always choose dewy, sheer tints over full coverage. This is me with no foundation, tinted moisturizer, or even concealer. It takes work to maintain great skin, and a little bit of trial and error to find what works for *your* skin, which can be an expensive journey. Part of my job is testing products, whether it’s a new lipstick or a retinol eye cream, and I am always looking for more affordable options to recommend. For the last month or so, I’ve been testing out @beautypie — a one stop, members only destination for luxury skin care and beauty products at cost. Could this be the ultimate way to find the best skin care routine for you, without breaking the bank? Click the link in my bio to read a very thorough post about my thoughts, including a full breakdown on how it works, the pricing structure, and which products are an absolute must.
