What are ✨ENZYMES✨??
I am sure you have heard of the word “enzyme” at least once in your life. But… WHAT IS an #enzyme ? The role of most enzymes are to speed up biological reactions in the body. The process of DNA replication alone requires more than 5 enzymes to be carried out start to finish! Some enzymes are even able to lower the energy required to complete the individual reaction☝🏼.
DID YOU KNOW ⁉️even the cheese 🧀you eat needs to have enzymes added during processing, in order to make the cheese? Some #skincare products add enzymes to the formula, specifically ones that work to break down the keratin protein in your skin. This results in a smooth appearance of the face🧖🏽♀️. Enzymes are even in laundry detergents😲!! WHY? They are added to breakdown the proteins, starches, and lipids that may be deposited on your clothes.
The enzymes that I am holding in my hand I like to call #BIOLOGICAL SCISSORS ✂️ !! These are known as restriction enzymes. These tiny proteins are able to cut pieces of DNA at any location you wish. Each restriction enzyme recognizes a different code of DNA. When they identify this code, they cut it, and now the DNA is in two different pieces. Whatever location you would like to cut, I am sure there is a restriction enzyme to do the job🙏🏼! Every step of the work that I do in the lab requires at least one enzyme. Without enzymes my whole PhD project would not be able to happen🧐.
Let me know, is this what you thought an enzyme was😝?
“Do you apply theory you learned in school at work?” Sometimes yes, sometimes no. School isn’t long enough to teach us all the details we need to know for work. That’s why after we graduate it takes time to learn the job and get used to the profession. So prepare for a world of “figuring it out” after school!
Summer is well underway here at NCSSM. Our Summer Research Internship Program students are now in their second week, with the largest cohort of students yet participating in research in the humanities, math, and science. More than 150 students from NCSSM's residential and @NCSSMOnline programs have the chance to conduct original research thanks to funding from private donors to the NCSSM Foundation, as well as generous donors like the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and GlaxoSmithKline. #research#STEM # designyourfuture
