🌴☀️🌊🐬✨🌇3️⃣0️⃣5️⃣ I love #Miami. It’s the most Latin/Caribbean city in America.
But like virtually everywhere else in this country, Black people in Miami find themselves erased or obscured from history & memory.
This was true when Black men made up almost half the necessary votes to officially incorporate the city of Miami in 1896, only to have their voting rights stripped away by Jim Crow laws a few decades later.
This erasure still happens when Miami is portrayed as a whitewashed Latin city, ignoring the fact that African-Americans & Bahamians were here decades before Latin@ immigrants.
The TV show #MiamiVice was often guilty of this whitewashing, so I re-imagined its soundtrack for my latest mix on my music platform #BodyAndSoulRecords. Instead of ‘80s pop & rock, you’ll hear R&B, salsa, and Latin pop.
