Since I was a kid I've been hearing people say "Don't be afraid of the unknown." Last night I learned 2 things about the unknown. #1. It's not only the BIG unknowns that we learn from. Sometimes it's the small ones. Like meeting a girl online. Like getting into her car. Like letting her picking the restaurant. "I'm already so far out of my comfort zone why stop now?" she said. That's how I knew I was with the right person. We ordered nachos. We ordered wings. I let her pick the sauce. I was being polite. She picked a spicy honey sauce. Gross. But when the food arrived... those wings... were the best thing that I had tasted all week. The unknown. It's the little yeses that you say to yourself on Monday that will facilitate the bigger yeses that you will need to say to survive until Friday. Nod your head enough and you'll notice that it actually requires an effort to stop-- and start shaking it. #2. If you REALLY want to test your fear of the unknown here's the best trick: put all your decision making in the hands of another person for a few hours. Let someone else choose what you will wear, what music you play in the car, and what you will eat. I like to play this game with my best friends where we go out to dinner and everyone orders for someone else. It like Secret Santa with food. That's why taking pictures of complete strangers rules. It's the ultimate unknown. But you only get a few hours at the beginning before the comfortable patterns start to emerge. So learn from it quickly. You don't have to make ALL the decisions. A photoshoot is not a dictatorship. But it's not a democracy either. It's more like a monarchy. And guess what? It's your job to protect the queen. Use the energy of this new situation you're both in to find something new. Either one of you can take the lead. Just make sure she looks good doing it. (Writing: @mutualinspirationsociety). When was the last time YOU dove into the unknown?
🍑 "You think a lot don't you?" Thinking is not bad in of itself... But what is it that YOU’RE thinking about? The problem I see for you is that while some people think empowering thoughts you think to your detriment. You think about problems that can't be solved. Only time can solve the kind of problems you have. But still you just keep thinking. Like a blind person thinking about light. "Maybe you can't stop the process of thinking, but... You CAN stop thinking about your problems, amplifying them. Think about other people. Even think about other people's problems. Read. Don't get addicted to your own despair. Disturb the cycle a little. @mutualinspirationsociety
If you’re not passionate about taking pictures then why are you taking pictures? And I don't just mean photographers either... I mean models too. It's so easy to recognize the people who put love and thought into their work. I'm thinking of @cubanmuva@edenlowther@eolhcsheppard@mynamesoundslikemeow and his wife @sierznatalka@tommywitdashots and the eternal inspiration I call mother: @edwinamihaela . Is there any passionate photographer/model that YOU know that I should know about? Please tag them below...
Have you ever committed to something until the bitter end? Have you ever held on to an idea you believe in beyond when it was shiny and new? Or do you just get passionate for a week or two tops and then move on to the next diversion? You tell me that maybe 'you're just not passionate about it anymore' and I'm like "What?" Is there a law that says that you should be in the "honeymoon phase"... past the honeymoon phase? You're seriously gonna make me do this? I have to "afternoon special" your ass right now? Come on! You must know that you're SUPPOSED to reach a plateau at some point! Then... you're supposed to work through the plateau! You know all of this right? That's how you make extraordinary things appear, remember? Stay with me! Think. Is there ANYTHING that you have that kind of commitment to? French fries don't count. The thing you get OBSESSED about is what mentors call "purpose". And you will only start to know the enjoyment that "it" brings when you reject your previous dysfunctions and start working again towards your destiny until it's back to fever pitch. Go! I had just met Irina in the club and she wanted to shoot. But to raise the bar for myself since I do this a lot, I decided to invite @karelchladek , the other photographer in the room to shoot her instead and I would shoot THEM BOTH. There’s always a way to raise the bar. It’s your job as a creative to find it. What can you change in your usual way of doing things that will make you look at the world differently? @mutualinspirationsociety
