It’s Day 7 of #progress2press and we’re going over the key to sticking your handstand! 🔑🤸♂️
Step 1. Sticking it is about stacking your hips over your shoulders — that’s the most important thing.
-Some people stack their shoulders over their hips and have a slight backbend in their back.
-Or you might have your ribs tucked in and your hips and shoulders are pretty much in a straight line (hollow body- ‘ideal’).
-Either way, as long as your hips are stacked, you can move your legs in many different directions— that’s how I can helicopter my legs with ease. Remember, the key is just keep your hips stacked, what you do with your legs isn’t that important.
Step 2. Micro-balancing. Once you can kick up to a handstand and stack your hips over your shoulders, you fall over because you are either OVER-BALANCING or UNDER-BALANCING.
-Over-balancing is when your weight is too far forward and you tip over into a backbend.
-Under-balancing is when your weight is too far back and you fall back down.
-To stabilize when you are over-balancing, use your FINGERTIPS as BREAKS, like in a car, stopping your weight from going too far forward, and drawing the weight back into the palm of your hands.
-When you are under-balancing and you have too much weight in the heel of your hand, actively PUSH weight forward into your fingertips.
As you can see from the video, I am constantly using my fingertips to help me micro-balance. I also slightly lift the middle joint of my fingers to help me really pulll and grip the ground with my finger pads.
Try activating your fingertips when you handstand and use your legs on the wall for support!

@tarastiles talks about this concept of “double doing” which is really popular in the yoga world right now.
Double doing is when your body is already using the musculature it needs to hold your body in space... and then you clench EXTRA muscles — excessively squeezing your glutes, abdominals, quads etc. on top of the ones you’re already using.
So it’s like if you were walking down the street and you decided to squeeze the lights out of your abs and glutes and pull your shoulders down while walking....would that help you walk ‘properly?’ Or would it just make you mad tired and awkward?
For the most part, our body has a natural alignment and rhythm and it’s our unconscious habits that make us not move well and get in our own way.
We can practice yoga by trying to mindfully move well. And we don’t have to squeeze our bottoms off to make it happen. ✌️✌️✌️

Want to work toward a solid inversion practice? 💪🔥 Here are some exercises to play with!! 😍
- Plank stabilization. In your plank, lift one hand, one foot, and try lifting BOTH one hand and foot at the same time!
- Plank drop down to forearms - start with one at a time until you feel comfortable with lowering both elbows at the same time.
- Helicopter legs. Challenge your inversion practice (headstand, forearm stand or handstand!) by moving your legs in every direction (don’t forget twists!)
- Inversion lower and lift. This will take your inversion practice to the next level! Lower and lift your legs while upside down-- extra extra challenge? Lower and lift your legs with a block between your feet or thighs! I'm still working on this one myself 😉
