I read that this is ‘the most spectacular glacial valley in the world.’ It must be. Seeing it fries the circuits like lightning to a lamp. You can’t take it in. The cliffs are too steep. And then waterfalls everywhere, the creeks in the forests above suddenly leap from the edge and fall in slow motion.
I feel a certain sadness in seeing the ‘best’ in the world. As if the journey is over.
There’s a line in the heartbreaking movie ‘Away From Her’ that goes something like, ‘there ought to be a place in the world that you always wanted to see, but never do see.’ I think about that often. Keeping some beauty beyond reach. Making sure that the world is forever too big and majestic for one life.
So much of living is in the wanting, the reaching. The best of life is pursuit. Plucking the flower spoils the flower. I’ve never loved food more than during a long hunger. And after gorging myself in a moment’s rapture, I swear to never eat again.
To see the ‘most beautiful’ is to end the search, right?
I don’t think so. Because anyone who has been in love knows that the alchemy of love springs from more than beauty alone. It is a boiling busy cauldron of things.
I love the Alps, but I am a visitor here. The Rockies, those are my mountains. I have memories there that the Alps cannot take or transpose. Telluride is my love not because it is better or the best, but because I find it beautiful and it holds ten years of my fondest memories. Therefore it is made sacred to me by nature, my past, nostalgia, and tradition. That can turn the most modest valley in Missouri into heaven on earth. It is when our lives are put into places, spirit sewed to soil, that superlatives and lists of the ‘world’s best’ lose their power.
You decide what places have magic or not. What is a pile of rocks or a holy temple.

The next time you find yourself in Japan, after going to Tsukiji fish market make your way over to Hamarikyu gardens to wander around the grounds. Tons of flowers, shady trees, and even a lake, all in the middle of urban downtown Tokyo 🏢🌻🌳

This is Priscilla Wheeler from Flint, Michigan, protesting in Washington, D.C. today as part of the #PoorPeoplesCampaign. Her tee shirt says "Flint Water Crisis: Four Years Too Long." She says: "We have been abandoned in this disaster… These are poor people's issues."
My heart is breaking. But we must act. We can’t sit this one out. Our government can STOP THIS NOW!! #Repost@traceeellisross
This is horrid!!! Is there a way we can protect and hold these precious children at least until we can get them reconnected to their parents? Everything in me wants to stop looking but I must — WE must keep our eyes open, as uncomfortable and hard as it is. My discomfort is nothing compared to what’s happening to these helpless children and these families. NOTHING. We must not close our eyes. We must not look away. We must keep using our voices. Here’s something we can do to help.
